Owens Truck and Haul has been in business since the mid 1980s. They've delivered goods for nearly every major industry in the nation and for 20 plus years, business was booming as they've traversed the country in all weather for all clients. During the boom times from 2002 to 2007 Owens Truck & Haul was the mastermind of a top-rated accounts receivable in the trucking industry. Few customers were ever late on bills and those clients who were, were sure to turn in their late payments within a reasonable amount of time. Times were great for everyone, and the cash was flowing. But a short year later, in the fall of 2008, when the United States economy took a nosedive and businesses both small and large began to feel the pinch on their pocketbooks, those that used to make their demands had suddenly and largely gone silent. Business slowed down. And worse yet, Owens had noticed during the early part of 2008 that though the bulk of their clients were always on time with payments, the few late-bloomers there were, had seemingly started to spread this illness. Spring changed to summer, summer changed to fall, and the CEO of Owens, Rodney Miles, was beginning to feel very uncomfortable indeed whenever he looked at their weekly Accounts Receivable reports. The numbers of clients who owed him back debt were growing. He had gone to his administrators and asked them what the problem had been. Were they doing things different, or wrong, when it came to collecting overdue accounts? When checking his bookkeeper's records this was definitely not the case. Perhaps he was losing his customers to his competitor, who seemed to offer very low prices with no guarantee of quality or performance, and these clients who were in debt to his company had possibly disappeared leaving him stranded. Perhaps they were unable to pay their debt to him, but were able to meet the costs of a lesser service. So he did the necessary research and, after discussions with friends in the same field, he realised that no, his customers hadn't gone anywhere else. They had just gone home. The situation looked dire to Rodney Miles. Rodney was very concerned, because there were constant overheads, goods to ship, employees to pay, and trucks which needed to be maintained, but there just wasn't the money coming back into the business. After work he would confide in his wife, Carmen, and neither were unable to stop the constant worry over the lack of funds.""Lin, I have a really bad feeling,"" he would say with deep woe.""What could you do differently?"" she would say.Rodney would stare off into the distance, and then slowly close his eyes. In his mind he could clearly see the fleet of trucks purchased over the many years. He could see them on the road, delivering good to all his loyal customers. But then a haze would cover his trucks and his vast fleet would vanish to leave just a few. Why couldnt he work out how to resolve this financial problem with his business?""I know what it is,"" Rodney said. ""I've relied too long on the profits I receive from invoices alone. I've let too many of our customers go too long without paying on their bills."" Linda could only grab her husband's hand and look at him lovingly, ""It's a hard economy. It might be awhile until things get settled up.

""Rodney knew his wife meant well, but he knew that he was responsible for too many people to sit idly by, waiting for the sun to peak over the clouds. The next day Rodney strolled into his office and was determined to sit down and make every phone call to every client who had owed Owens money. Now, it wasn't the most efficient way to spend a day as a chief executive, what he really needed to be doing was to be overseeing all of the other intricacies of shipment and delivery and reaching out to prospective clients or retraining his sales team to do the same. Even though he was doing something to help his company, he knew he had folks on salary to do just this thing. Wasting money, wasting time - even with the best of intentions, Rodney knew that he was in trouble.

Poor Rodney spent the whole morning trying in vain to contact his debtors: they promised to call back, dodged his calls, or made small interest-only payments. He was beginning to feel quite despaired when his secretary knocked on his door.

""Rodney, can I have a word?"" she asked standing in the doorway.

""Sure thing Nicole, come on in."" Rodney leaned back in his chair and looked expectantly at Nicoleerely.""Well, I did a little searching this afternoon and tried to figure out a way out of this mess Rodney."" She opened up a folder she had been carrying and pulled out a small wad of papers, placing them on the desk in front of him.""Have you ever heard the word factoring?"" Nicoleerley asked.""It sounds vaguely familiar. What is it?"" he said. She began, ""Well, it's really very simple. So basically, factoring invoices would enable us to get paid on the nose for loads that we haul.""Rodney interrupted ""Immediately?"".""Yes, immediately,"" she continued, ""In a nutshell, it's pretty easy. We start by having a professional account manager review our figures and help us set up a company profile. Included in the profile would be the investigation of our accounts receivable aging reports, our current customers' credit limits etc.. In addition, factoring will assist in determining our customers' creditworthiness, independent from their credit relationship with our company. It provides a very broad view.I see, Rodney said. And then what?Well, after their review, and were approved for a factoring contract, we can negotiate terms and conditions. You'll be surprised at the amount of flexibility, all dependent upon the credit histories and business volume.

This company tells us what the cost will be to purchase factoring for our accounts receivable. We come to an agreement and the funding starts pouring out.Leaning forward, Rodney studied the documents very closely.""It sounds too good to be true, Nicole,"" he said.""Now, now, I know, I thought the same thing. But really, they have guaranteed us experts that do all the legwork, which would free us up here to focus on our clients in good standing and marketing, all that good stuff. They appear to be very flexible, Rodney,"" she drew a circle around a paragraph on the document before him.""Just how flexible?"" he asked.""They personalize the factoring rates so that the amount they are willing to take on is commensurate with our needs and our clients debt. It only takes 2 to 4 days for this to be figured out. """"That sounds pretty good, seeing as we tapped ourselves out with bank loans last year to repair the fleet and money sure is tight. We need to keep business rolling as normal and every day were going unpaid, were closer to facing some serious problems in both the short and long term,"" said Rodney. He took a deep breath and looked at his secretary with something she recognized as hope.""Precisely. This could very well be the answer to resolving the problems we're having with these clients who still owe us money.""Rodney took a moment to think about this solution, and agreed with his secretary. The clients who owed them money were long standing friends and professional resources of Owens. They didn't want to throw away these relationships because they were having trouble paying their bills now. Rodney knew only too well that the whole economy was floundering, and that it was not going to change overnight. If he didn't handle these debtors in the right way, that unknown amount of time could spell disaster for all of them. Of course he didn't want to lose any more money, but he didn't want to lose business either.""Let me go over this tonight Nicole, and thankyou."" Nicole nodded, satisfied with her work, and she left the office feeling quite content in the knowledge that she had helped Rodney keep the shirt on his back, and possibly hers too.Rodney sat behind his desk and looked over the details Nicole had not mentioned in their meeting. He wondered if there might be other problems freight factoring could help Owens Truck & Haul with? With his pencil gliding down the sheet he noticed that the factoring company could help fray the cost of fuel with fuel discount cards and fuel advances. Rodney was surprised: it said that his company could get up to fifty percent cash advances on load pickups. As a man who hated binding contracts with no room to breathe, he was pleased to see that this factoring company would not make him sign a long term contract, would not make him pay any sign up fees and there was no minimum volume required.""Well, I'll have to tell Enrique about this,"" Rodney muttered to himself. His son-in-law Enrique had liked the idea of Owens so much and revered his father in law for having such business acumen that only two years before, he had gathered the venture capital to begin his own transportation service company. At that time Rodney knew the struggles Enrique would face, but he still encouraged him to follow his dream. With the faltering economy, if a big fish like Owens was hurting, a little guy like Enrique was about to catch his death. Perhaps the antidote to these problems was in freight factoring, and they were about to find out. Some months later, having successfully gone through the entire process of the application, having experts study his credit history and statements and review his accounts receivable, Rodney found that he was starting his journey out of the despair which had been created for him by his delinquent account holders. They adopted reasonable factoring purchase contracts and stopped wasting their own precious time trying to collect debts. They took that time and refocused effort to offering competitive prices in new territories. Rodney recalled those dismal months when he wasn't aware of freight factoring, and he shuddered at those memories. Had he missed the boat on this one, he probably wouldn't be in business today.

Factoring in the Future of a Trucking Business: A Story The phone was ringing on his desk, and Dean Ray just sat there letting it ring. He let his morning coffee cool and left his cigarette to ash itself in the tray, because he is trying to make the biggest decision ever for his trucking company. Ray Trucking Company had reached a turning point and he now had to make a decision as to whether he should sign up with a factoring company, and indeed if this would be a good or regrettable decision for his business.

More than forty years ago Dean's father had started this business working as an owner-operator and eventually growing Ray Trucking Company into a fifteen trailer fleet. There had been some hard times when it seemed everything was going to go under and even Deans mother strapped herself into a cab to make hauls. His father had lived long enough to witness the price of hires drop during the recession and watch the eruption of fuel prices afterwards. Now the company was solely in Deans hands and he wanted to live to see it in better shape for his sons.

To move Ray Trucking Company ahead into the future, he needed a steady cash flow but there was just not enough money to go around. He had employees to pay. They all have families and the usual household bills. A few of the refrigerated trailers really needed some maintenance, and in order to stay competitive he really wanted to invest in specialized haulers to meet the increasing requests for loads of agricultural and energy equipment. Every time he had to turn down a request, Ray Trucking looked weak in a very strong market.

His father would have told him to wait and to take his time adding on new technology. Dean chuckled, thinking about his father. He remembered when his father was totally against installing GPS units in the cabs. His Dad would say ""Why on earth do you need some stranger telling you to get off the exit that everyone knows has been there for years? He smiled to himself as he remembered his father poking fun at the other drivers who switched to automatic, even though automatic was quite obviously more efficient (though less manly). His father days were long gone and technology was actually an important improvement for the business such as having Qualcomm to cut down on fruitless time communicating on the phone for bills of lading.

Dean believed a successful man is always thinking of his next step. What would be the next step for Ray Trucking? And how would he be able to afford it? Funding was all tied up in the mortgage for the office and garage and in the fuel bills. Thankfully he'd just finished paying off the bank loan for the installation of satellite radio in the trucks.

But was factoring the answer? There was a lot he didnt understand about the process. It sounded a lot like ninth grade algebra which just didnt feel like it belonged as part of the trucking business. Factoring companies buy your invoices and manage your accounts receivable for a certain percentage of the invoiced amount. In return, the factoring company pays the trucking business straight away, providing immediate cash flow for the business to pay staff, purchase fuel, and do any repairs or maintenance. Without the assistance of factoring, you have to wait for customers to send you the payment which is often 30 days late. In those 30 days, a trucking company cant pay its bills and employees in invoices.

Dean had to really consider what his next step was going to be. Dean had heard that there were companies that charged for same day money transfers and would only advance a percentage of the money owed to your company while holding the rest in a private account if they didnt get their bill payment within 60 or so days. Plus it was worse still if the customer didnt pay up at all because then the factoring company would take it right out of the money supposed to be coming to you! He'd even heard about some companies putting you onto a sliding percentage scale regardless of any previously signed contracts for possibly 3% or 7%, and there you are now with 10% coming as a charge to you out of the freight bill. His friend Ronnie who had a trucking business in Missouri, was run nearly into the ground by a factoring company that charged him the full freight bill on top of the factoring fees. He knew he would have to be very careful if he was to avoid any of these shady companies?

But it turned out to be quite easy. All the factoring companies he researched were open about their business practices and very friendly on the phone when he called. Customer service appeared to understand their company and explained in clear, concise English exactly how it all worked. He was quite happy to sign an exclusive contract. He liked the idea of a long term commitment so he knew he wouldnt have to bother going back and forth to different companies and wasting time filing more forms. Nobody charged him for credit checks and they offered him a fuel advance on the pick-up of the load. Many companies offered a non-recourse factoring program that suited him just fine. Also he was happy to hear how much he was offered in terms of percentages on the freight bills. It sounded like a great scheme to him.

For Dean it was quite a relief to be dealing with the factoring company. They were extremely helpful and more personable than the bank staff. It seemed as though those bank people spoke another language, but these factoring guys knew the trucking business and spoke to him like a client, not like a beggar for a handout. The factoring companies didnt worry over his credit and the debt troubles his father had had in the past of the company. Factoring was based on the credit of his customers and on their reliability which worked well for Dean because he and his father had built up good strong relationships over decades with their list of clients. So he knew they would understand when the factoring company contacted them for the invoices. His clients wouldn't have any problems, nor would they think poorly of Ray Trucking, because the factoring companies handle themselves in such a polite and professional manner, similar to the way his father had managed the business in the past.

Dean stepped out of his office to let his secretary know to expect the arrival of the factoring contract shortly. He felt exhilarated by the new possibilities that would make the future of the company fun again and put the stress of the difficult times behind him. He suddenly realized that, with this new cash flow, he could actually expand Ray Trucking Company and who knows, move into Canada, which had always been his dream. He was a happy man again knowing that he had just made a decision which would guarantee the success of his business and his sons wouldn't be inheriting a financial mess.

Trucking Factoring  Articles

So, this is not a loan? Ross Barnes asked as he leaned back in his chair, crossing his legs. The woman who sat across the desk smiled and shook her head. No, not exactly, she said.Ross was the owner of a small trucking company which had fallen on some hard times recently. Certainly the trucking business can be an extremely profitable venture, and for many years it had been that way for Wallace. His company was called Brown Trucking, named after both of his grandfathers, Angel and Jamie. They had both been hardworking men, and had done a lot to make Ross the same.Six months ago disaster struck Wallace's business when two out of his fleet of fifteen trucks were taken off the road.

One was involved in a very costly accident, and the other simply rolled over, and headed to the trucking graveyard. Ross depended on his full fleet, and missing two trucks was devastating . In addition, he just didn't have the available cash to buy a new truck, plus repair the other one.Paying of bills in the trucking industry is always a major cause for concern for businesses.

You could go a month or more before bills were completely paid off. This system works okay as long as no problems arise, but if they do, then things can get quite sticky.Ross wasnt a bad owner, and he hadnt messed up. Certain events had occurred that he couldn't possibly have predicted, and now he had to find a way to protect his business and prevent it from ultimate devastation. And that's why he found himself across the desk from this woman. Ross knew she was employed by a Factoring company and that her name was Jackie. Ross had come across her company as he sat in his office late one night, pouring over the internet for some solution to his problem long after his employees had gone home. She sat there now, and explained. it is really not a loan at all: we actually buy your accounts receivable. We're not giving you finance to be repaid later: we're purchasing something from you, and when you can you can buy it back. This is a win-win situation: we're protected from a total loss, and you're protected from the ridiculous fees and charges you'd have to pay if you borrowed from a bank.Ross nodded. It sounded good to him, almost too good. The woman laughed. You look like you dont believe me, she chuckled. No, I do, I just think it sounds a bit too good to be true. I thought I was going to lose my company.Jackie smiled, agreeing. We get that a lot. There's no way we want to see you lose your business. We know how hard you work, and that you've invested everything in your business. Sometimes you need help. That's why we do what we do.Well, I'm very grateful that you came to see me today. No problem - I'm just down the road. We normally do it all online but I was happy to come and visit you today, said Jackie with a smile. Lets see what we can do to help you.And with that they set about making a profile.

Ross filled the form out, with Jackie available to help him if he needed it. The profile filled Jackie and her company in on Wallaces company, and would help them determine if he was suitable for factoring. Unfortunately, not all companies are. Some businesses are beyond the help of a Factoring company, while other businesses weren't in enough financial stress to warrant it. As Ross completed his form, Jackie listened to his story and she felt quite sure he would be the ideal candidate for Factoring.Jackie took the completed form and placed it in her briefcase. She then stood, reached across the desk and shook Wallaces hand. He also stood up, and they smiled at each other. They said their goodbyes and Ross walked her to the door, and then returned to his office. His employees were there, seven who worked in the office, and as he sat behind his desk once more he heard the familiar clack of fingers on keyboards, the electronic whine of the copy machine. He shut his eyes. He felt so drained: he had been flailing helplessly for so long, he just knew his business was going to collapse and probably take him with it. But now, after speaking to Jackie and learning all about Factoring, he felt such a huge relief, like someone had just lifted a huge weight off his shoulders. He sat back in his chair and ran a hand through his graying but still thick black hair. The long nights, where he couldnt sleep. The terrifying panic attacks that occurred regardless of where he was. Already he could feel all the stress start to drain away. He wasnt out of the woods yet, there was still a lot of work to be done, but he could feel it. He was still here; he knew this was the right path for him, and he felt proud that he had taken the appropriate steps to sort out his problems.Ross couldnt help but think back to when he had first started the business. He had opened a restaurant at age twenty two when he was fresh out of school. It had been successful. Offering home cooking in his own hometown, his business had really prospered. But he had gotten bored. He wasn't passionate about the food industry. He thought long and hard, and then he decided to sell the restaurant. He took six months off, and during that time he decided to create Brown Trucking. So he did it. Once again he built a company from the ground up. The business had been an instant success. Then disaster! The two trucks went down and suddenly his success wasn't looking so guaranteed. He was about to turn fifty. He didnt think he had it in him, to save this company. But he couldnt give up. Just the thought of shutting down, cutting his losses, laying off his workers - the whole thing made him physically sick some nights. He didnt know how to say quit. And now it seemed as though he wouldn't have to - all because of Factoring. Ross opened his eyes, sat forward, turned his computer on. He had lots to do. He could be thankful later, for now, it was time to work.

As most of us realize, trucking is an unbelievably enormous business with a lot of agencies out there employing hundreds of vehicle drivers. Regretfully, quite a few of these drivers end up in cash predicaments since they are still expecting work from six weeks earlier to actually compensate them. When this is the situation for a trucking company, resorting to factoring firms for solutions maybe the very best option left.

This indicates that a truck firm can pay out the paychecks of the people, keep all the trucks topped off with fuel and continue to escalate, rise and expand without continually waiting for the resources which is taking too long to come in. Trucking Establishments operating without a factoring system implemented are leaving themselves at substantial danger, as competitors cash out quickly and carry on to grow.

There's genuinely not much to be troubled about when it comes to employing a Factoring firm-- they commonly are not like a banking company or somebody who is going to leave you with a large stockpile of financial debt to repay. You give them legitimate invoices from work you have already wrapped up , you are only speeding the repayment system.

In the United States, where truck establishments flourish, factoring establishments are not considered taking on loan in any capacity. This private settlement then lets both groups to make money and experience a comfortable future-- it provides the factoring firm a guaranteed asset of money to include in the list and it furnishes the trucking firm the required funds that they worked hard to earn.

The trucking enterprise provides their accounts to the factoring firm. The trucking factoring provider then collect the payment amounts from the trucking company's customers. Factoring has been in existence for centuries and has been used for decades by plenty of varying business sectors-- but none exceeding so than truckers. While you may well lose out on a small part of the money, something like 1-3 % depending upon who you deal with, it indicates that you are receiving the money today and can actually begin setting the money to operate.

Once and for all, an IOU or an invoice is absolutely not going to fund costs, is it? For trucking establishments when the money can be really good one day and gone the next, it's up to the vehicle drivers to work prudently and to guarantee they are leaving themselves with a notable volume of time and money to get through the week up until they are compensated once more.

So the next time your trucking enterprise is having some temporary cash flow challenges and you are devoting a bit too much time chasing slowly paying clienteles, why not start taking into consideration using a factoring companies as a means to get your money and give yourself a more comfortable future in the eyes of your trucking staff and your bank difference?

Traditional Bank Loans

Finance through a bank loan is the normal, or traditional, way of financing your business. These loans can be a life-saver, but they're not always available to every business. As an example, a newly formed business may not have the required assets to qualify for a bank loan, and even if they did, it's usual practise for a bank to use the business itself as collateral. This means that if you default on your loan payment you could lose your entire business. In addition, while you apply for a certain loan amount, that is all the financing you are entitled to. Of course, once that loan has been re-paid, you can always re-apply for another loan.

What Are Trucking Factoring Companies?

Trucking Factoring companies do not give loans, and the money you get from the Trucking Factoring company does not put you in debt. The finance you receive from the Trucking Factoring company is determined by money already earned by your business, but not yet received. Trucking Factoring companies actually purchase your accounts receivable or at least part of them for a percentage of their total worth, Normally around 80%-95%. The amount of money you can receive is based on the amount of money you have earned and the accounts receivable you are willing to sell. Once you have set up Trucking Factoring account it continues as long as you wish it too and the amount of money available to you even can grow as your business grows, giving you the ready cash you need to meet your own obligations.

Benefits of a Trucking Factoring Company Vs. A Bank Loan

While not every business can take advantage of Trucking Factoring account financing (you have to have a business that has account receivables) for those that can use this type of financing there are several distinct benefits.

1. There is no debt. Since the Trucking Factoring company actually buys your accounts receivable you don't actually incur debt like you do with a bank loan. One of the main benefits of this kind of financing is that your business credit rating and your personal credit rating won't be affected. In the event that your business fails, you wouldn't have to be concerned about someone coming after your personal or your business assets in order to pay off a loan. The debt goes onto your credit report with a bank loan, with only one missed payment adversely affecting your business credit: it would also affect your ability to secure insurance, and may reflect on your personal credit rating as well.

2. No Collateral Required. Another benefit of using a Trucking Factoring company instead of a traditional loan is that you aren't required to provide collateral to the Trucking Factoring company in order to secure financing, because the company buys the accounts receivables; not loans you money based on them. In addition, while the Trucking Factoring company does run a credit check on your customers whose accounts receivables are offered for financing, the state of your credit is not an issue. This means that it's easier for new businesses to access the finance they need through a Trucking Factoring company, providing their accounts receivable are in good order. A bank may believe you haven't been in business long enough to be able to cover this risk.

3. Receive Your Money Faster. Using a Trucking Factoring company means that you'll get the finance quicker. The money will normally be in your account within 24 hours, once the Trucking Factoring company is confident that your customers accounts are likely to be paid. With a bank, there are vast amounts of paperwork, then the loan has to be underwritten, which can take months before you actually see the loan if it is approved.

4.Interest is Paid Up Front. With a bank loan interest continues to build, and this has to be paid the whole time you have a business loan; however with a Trucking Factoring company there is no interest - they take it right off the top by deducting it from the total amount of receivable accounts. So you don't have to worry about monthly loan repayments, and you don't have to worry about the amount of interest payable, because all the money in the account is yours to spend.

As you can see, there are several benefits that makes considering financing through a Trucking Factoring company over a traditional bank worthwhile. However, there are also a couple of other benefits that a factory company can offer your business is far beyond the scope of the bank. The main benefit is that once you've sold your accounts receivable to the Trucking Factoring company, you are free from having to collect money owed by your customers. The Trucking Factoring company takes over that chore, since it is now their money to collect. Trucking Factoring companies are very good at collecting these debts, saving you the time and effort that you need to devote to your growing company.

In addition, since the Trucking Factoring company evaluates the credit quality of your customers prior to purchasing the accounts receivable you gain valuable information into which customers are likely to pay and which ones are not so likely to pay. While a Trucking Factoring company is not the only way for your business to obtain the money it needs to keep growing, it does offer a type of financing well worth considering.
